Quiz: How much do you know about melanoma?
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), with approximately 5.4 million basal and squamous cell skin cancers diagnosed each year. Melanoma is the most dangerous type.
“Melanoma is a type of cancer that affects the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that colors your skin, hair and eyes,” says Dr. Deepti Singh, a medical oncologist at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center’s Cancer Institute Cancer in Chicago.
“More than half of all melanomas are originally detected by patients or their loved ones, not their doctors,” adds Dr. Singh. “Melanomas are easier to treat if caught early, so performing regular self-exams is extremely important.”
Given the risks, how much do you know about this deadly form of cancer?
