Before she was even born, Emily Cepkauskas’ parents knew their daughter would face a difficult road. Born with a congenital heart defect, as well as Down Syndrome, Emily would need open heart surgery during her first year of life. She underwent her first surgery at just three months old, followed by a second life-saving surgery shortly after. Emily’s future, once shadowed with fear and uncertainty, is now filled with hope thanks to the pediatric cardiology and CV surgery expertise and the care she received through Advocate Children’s Heart Institute and Advocate Children’s Hospital. Emily’s family is sharing her story to inspire others. Their hope is that others will give to Advocate Children’s Heart Institute so that other families will have the same resources that helped them get through one of the most difficult times of their lives.
Today, Emily’s family is partnering with Advocate Charitable Foundation to create the Emily’s Heart Pediatric Surgical Heart Unit Fund, supporting the non-medical needs of families who have a child with a congenital heart defect.
