Health care heroes: Going the extra mile from Wisconsin to Illinois
COVID-19 is surging differently across the country, and some Advocate Aurora Health hospitals in and around Chicago, IL have been experiencing higher volumes of patients testing positive with the virus.
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL was one of those hospitals. In order to better care for their patients, it needed to open an additional Intensive Care Unit. This also would increase the demand for nurses experienced caring for patients in this environment.
When the call went out across the system looking for nurses with ICU experience to volunteer, Kristy Gunia was eager to assist.
An ICU nurse at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center in Sheboygan, WI, Kristy said volunteering was an easy decision.
“I know that if the tables were turned, our nurses from Illinois would do the same, so I didn’t hesitate to offer my time,” she says.
Kristy left behind her husband and two cats to go where she was needed the most.
“Kristy has been integral in Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center’s preparation for COVID-19 and has partnered with others in our professional development department to create training for non-ICU RNs to help in the ICU,” said registered nurse Rita Zehr, ICU Patient Care Manager and Kristy’s leader. “Kristy works with a passion of caring and high standards. She provides the highest quality of care to her patients and their families and continually goes the extra mile.”
