Using technology to keep people safe

Dr. Marc Mesleh, general surgeon for Advocate Medical Group, recently operated on a patient who needed a follow up appointment, however, the day before the appointment the patient’s wife called because he had developed a low grade fever and cough.

Out of caution Dr. Mesleh and his office staff decided to not have the patient travel and do a video visit instead, even though the fever symptoms had subsided and the wife wanted it to be in-person.

Registered nurse Bridget Hallberg helped the patient get set up on the LiveWell App and Zoom App, patiently guiding them for over 30 minutes, so they were able to do the video visit the same day. The appointment went smoothly and the patient was better.

A couple days later the patient’s wife developed COVID-19 and was admitted to the hospital with respiratory symptoms. Thankfully, she is better now and should make a full recovery. Leveraging this technology not only helped to care for this patient’s needs but also kept the health care team safe from COVID-19 exposure.
