Why irregular periods should not be ignored at any age

One of the most common reasons for irregular periods, especially in young women, is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) — a hormone imbalance that causes irregular menstrual periods.

Women with PCOS do not regularly release an egg or ovulate. Therefore, they do not get regular menstrual periods. PCOS can cause many additional health issues, including infertility.

“Irregular ovulation leads to unshed uterine lining which causes it to become thick,” explains Dr. Ericka Searles, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Advocate Health Care. “This can lead to other health concerns down the road, such as endometrial cancer.”

Individuals with PCOS often have acne, benign ovarian cysts, weight gain, onset of excess facial and body hair growth, or hair loss. When those with PCOS get their menstrual period, they are more likely to experience painful cramps.

Dr. Searles says oral contraceptives are a great treatment option for those with PCOS.

“Birth control pills are often prescribed to help regulate your hormone levels which can lead to regular menstrual periods,” Dr. Searles says. “Oral contraceptives can also help reduce PCOS symptoms, such as preventing excess cysts from forming.”

Although birth control is a good way to alleviate PCOS symptoms, eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and eliminating simple carbohydrates, including white flour-based foods, can also improve symptoms.

You should not be on birth control pills if you have blood clots, a family history of blood clots, certain types of migraine headaches, certain types of heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, liver disease or if you smoke.

Talk to your health care provider about the potential side effects of oral contraceptives and whether it’s right for you.
