Grandchildren could add years to your life

Grandchildren could add years to your life

Grandchildren are even more special than you think. Your precious little ones keep you active, more mentally alert and lift your spirits.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults should get 2.5 hours of moderate exercise each week to maintain their strength and stamina, along with reducing health risks, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis.

Grandchildren keep you active by getting you up and moving to play catch, help pick up toys and tend to their needs.

“Age is just a number and every step you take is a step toward greater strength, independence and joy,” says Josh Mulloy, a family nurse practitioner at Aurora Health Care. “Exercise is your ticket to a longer, healthier and happier life.”

Mulloy says staying active strengthens your body, keeps your mind sharp and brightens your spirit.

“Every little bit counts and it’s never too late to start,” he says. “Keep moving forward to invest in your health, your freedom and a life lived to the fullest.”

Spending time with your grandchildren also boosts your mental activity. It requires memory, multitasking and quick reflexes – slowing cognitive decline.

Seniors often face loneliness and depression which can weaken your immune system. Playing an active role in the lives of your grandchildren can lift your spirits and give you a new sense of purpose.

“By being present and intentional in your grandkids’ lives, you can make this relationship even more special, benefit your physical and mental health, and enrich your life,” says Mulloy.
