Popular fast food chain to serve antibiotic-free chicken
Popular fast food chain, Chick-fil-A, is joining the trend that many other restaurants these days are following. The company recently released that they are making a promise to serve only chicken that is antibiotic-free within the next five years.
Serving antibiotic-free chicken is a much safer alternative to chicken raised on antibiotics. The majority of fast food livestock are raised on high doses of antibiotics. When we consume this meat, we ingest those traces of antibiotics which, in turn, build up our tolerance to the medication, experts say.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says antibiotic-free foods are important because, “all uses of antimicrobial drugs, in both humans and animals, contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance.” The FDA states that “it is important to use these drugs only when medically necessary.”
Chik-fil-A will partner with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to assure that their supplying farmers do not use antibiotics in their chicken.
The restaurant is a privately owned company that focuses on serving the highest quality food in their 1,700 locations around the U.S. The company states that they are continuing to remove as many additives as possible in their foods and strive for clean, high-quality ingredients. Recently, they modified their chicken soup to contain no dye, removed artificial ingredients in their buns and nixed the high fructose corn syrup from their sauce and dressings.
The founder of Chick-fil-A, Truett Cathy, is devoted to serving customers and says, “Food is essential to life. Therefore, make it good.”
