Are eggs bad for you or not?

The question of whether eggs are a good staple of your daily breakfast can be a difficult one for regular people to crack.

It’s a debate that pops up in the media all the time. Are eggs bad for your heart or not?

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people who ate eggs or other food with high cholesterol were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. One half egg per day was associated with about a 6 percent increase in cardiovascular disease risk.

Dr. Neal Sawlani, a structural heart cardiologist with Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., says the study was well done because it studied nearly 30,000 adults – a big number.

But it’s also tricky. The study says that people who ate more eggs developed heart disease at a higher rate. But it doesn’t necessarily say that people developed that heart disease because they ate more eggs. There could be other factors involved.

Maybe people who eat fewer eggs exercise more, which would be good for their hearts.

The bottom line, Dr. Sawlani says, is that people should talk to a doctor about a tailored approach to their diet.

“If someone is at risk for heart disease, I’ll caution them to eat a heart healthy diet and often less high cholesterol foods,” he says.
