What’s it like to have COVID-19 while pregnant?
For the past 14 years, being there for pregnant women has been a priority for Dr. Kelly Malloy, OBGYN at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, Wis., and during a pandemic, her dedication continues.
“I love being part of women’s pregnancy journeys and helping them through this challenging, yet ever-so rewarding time of their lives,” she says. “This is a very anxiety-provoking time, especially to be both pregnant and battling COVID-19.”
Though researchers are still learning about how COVID-19 affects pregnant women, they have already found that some women with the virus can experience more symptoms, and often sooner and more severe, than non-pregnant women. Care for those carrying a child can involve close fetal monitoring and carefully watching over both mother and unborn little one, including coordinated care with several other specialists within the hospital.
Because pregnancy adds an extra layer of caution during a pandemic, Dr. Malloy says it is of utmost importance for expecting women to keep up with regular check-ups and to get the COVID-19 vaccine after discussion with their doctors.
“I finally feel a sense of safety returning to my family every day after being exposed to those with COVID-19. The vaccine is the safest and only feasible way out of this pandemic,” says Dr. Malloy, who is most looking forward to hugging her 97-year-old grandmother again after 12 long months. “We can all see the light at the end of the tunnel, but keep strong and help us save lives. If you are able to, and when available to you, I urge you to get your vaccine!”
