7.12.17 On This DateIn 1957, Dr. Leroy Burney, surgeon general of the United States during the Eisenhower administration, became the first federal official to publicly identify cigarette smoking as a cause of lung cancer. Dr. Burney died in 1998 at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., at the age of 91.
